Cetewayo is a classic yacht with a colourful racing history. Her owner, who has spared no expense to ensure both functionality as well as originality, has brought her back to her original splendour.

Designed and built for exhilarating yet comfortable sailing, she can be enjoyed for both racing and cruising charters. For sailing novices, she offers an alternative, more traditional route to learn how to sail. For clients looking for pampering with a difference she can offer a wonderful relaxing cruise. And for veterans there is the chance to try their hand at putting her through her paces, maximising boat speed and raising the distinctive scarlet Zulu spinnaker as Cetewayo demonstrates her racing credentials.

History
Built in 1955 by Morris and Lorimer and designed by Laurent Giles, Cetewayo was originally known by the name 'Zulu'. After a change of ownership in 1980 she was renamed 'Cetewayo' after the last king of the Zulu's. The 1980s were not kind to her, with a catalogue of neglect and at one point even abduction! She ended that decade rotting in a Pembroke creek looking to all intents a completely terminal case. It was at this stage that fate reversed her fortunes. A chance find by present owner in 1989 saw the start of a remarkable transformation, which would take her from a gutted hulk to the sleek high tech racer that she is today.

Her vintage features include:

  • Teak construction below the waterline
  • Solid teak decking with polished fittings
  • Mahogany upper works, cockpit and covering boards
  • Dual cockpits. Steering cockpit aft with main cockpit forward of this, seating 6

Her set up includes:

  • Wind speed instruments and VHF aerial
  • Permanent backstay with hydraulic tensioning system to change mast prebend
  • 7/8th action sloop rig
  • Hollow mast, constructed with glued spruce sections. Length 19.2 m, rig set up with 66 cm of mast rake
  • Spruce boom, 6.2 m long Dacron masthead asymmetric spinnaker
  • Choice of Dacron and high tech Kevlar sails
  • Masthead symmetrical spinnaker for deeper wind angles in up to 20 knots. Above this heavier, fractional sails are used - a combination that makes the boat very competitive downwind.
  • 48 horsepower, Kaboto marine diesel auxiliary engine
